Cardiff crash victim Eve Smith lost her sister to a drug driver eight years ago

A young woman who died in a car accident with her two friends lost her sister eight years ago in a fatal collision caused by a drug driver.

The body of Eve Smith, 21, was found inside a white Volkswagen Tiguan which was nestled in trees just meters from the A48 motorway in Cardiff in the early hours of this morning.

She died alongside Darcy Ross, 21, and Ravel Jane, 24. Bank employee Sophie Rawson, 20, and Shane Loughlin, 32, were alive but seriously injured – and may have been undetected next to their dead friends for 48 hours.

Hawa’s family dealt with a similar tragedy in 2015, when her sister Zana died in a car driven by Sakhwat Ali, 23, who had picked her up home from a party while high on cocaine, cannabis and twice the alcohol limit. The car flipped over at 60 mph.

After the tragedy, her family demanded tougher penalties for the murderous drivers and appeared in a Sky documentary about their life with a crew that followed them for three years.

After Xana’s death in 2015, Eve paid tribute to her, saying that she had “tragically lost my beautiful older sister.”

“I never thought I’d have to say it or even think about it, but that’s all I do,” Eve, 13 at the time, wrote on Facebook. No one will understand the pain I feel when I hear her name or see her picture.

It is very difficult to understand or accept her passing away and I will never be able to see her again. A million times I needed it and a million times I cried.

“If only my love could save her, she wouldn’t have died.”

Their father is Tony Borg, a former boxer who trained Welsh Olympic medal winning boxers and world champion Lee Selby.

After driver Sakhat Ali was imprisoned for eight years, Zana Emma’s mother revealed her grief in a personal statement read out in court.

“Watching her brother, Zane, and sisters, Lauren and Eve, trying to carry on with life in so much pain is heartbreaking,” she said. “

Not only did they lose their beloved sister that day, but they also lost their mother, because I am not and can never be the same person again.

Truthfully, if I didn’t have my other kids to take care of I wouldn’t be here today because the pain is unbearable.

She is not here and will never be back. This nightmare is real and will never end.

Emma added, ‘I can’t accept that this is real, I’m constantly in a daze, trying to carry on with the mundane tasks of life trying to provide my kids with some normalcy.

I will not see Zana marrying, having children, and succeeding in her chosen field of work.

There will always be an empty place at our table, a hole in our hearts that can’t be filled, and there won’t be a day that we won’t mourn.

“Every family celebration will be bittersweet, knowing she isn’t there to share the joy and be the life and soul of the party that she was.”
