At the beginning of the year, we thought March might be one of the most important months in Apple’s history. Persistent rumors have claimed that Apple will unveil its long-awaited mixed reality headset, the “Apple Reality Pro,” at a spring event, with a release scheduled for the end of the year.
Now, it appears as if the announcement has been pushed back to WWDC in June (or even later), calling into question the whole point of the spring event in the first place. There’s not much else to announce—the 15-inch MacBook Air is still said to be coming this spring, but everything else is out.
So we expect a fairly nice March this year. The 15-inch MacBook Air may get a direct-to-web release (April is a possibility, too), the next round of OS updates will likely exit beta, and several new and returning Apple TV+ launches, along with the usual Apple Arcade Games Weekly.
New hardware
With all the recent rumors pointing to a WWDC (or later) announcement of Apple Reality Pro, we’re not sure if we’ll get an Apple event in March as was once rumored. However, there are two possible device ads that can hit:
15-inch MacBook Air: The latest rumor has it that we’re on the cusp of a brand new MacBook. A 15-inch MacBook Air, to be exact, with an M2 chip (and maybe an M2 Pro option). Beyond the larger screen size, we don’t know what to expect from it, but it’s a safe bet to expect it to be the same as the 13.6-inch Air, only expanded to a 15.5-inch screen size. Apparently, mass production of the monitors is underway, which could be announced in March (most likely with a glossy website update rather than a live event), with a release in early April.
iPhone 14 yellow: According to Mac Takara, Apple will soon unveil its new spring iPhone 14: Yellow. It could arrive as early as this week on Apple’s website.
AirPods Max: Apple’s high-end headphones have been low on stock for months, and it’s been more than two years since the original model landed. Several improvements could be on the way, including USB-C, adaptive transparency, better noise cancellation, and new colors.
Mac Pro: Apple is expected to release a new Mac Pro with Apple silicon inside, but recent rumors suggest that it won’t arrive until WWDC.
Mac studio: Apple’s high-end desktop is set to get the M2 upgrade, but recent rumors suggest that Apple may delay it until the M3.
Applications and software updates
Entering March, Apple is bringing the beta version of iOS 16.4 and macOS 13.3 to the public, bringing some new emoji, web push notifications, and some small tweaks to apps like Podcasts and Apple Music. We’ve only had one beta, but the testing period will likely end in March with the full release of these OS updates to devices. Depending on the timing, we may see the start of iOS 16.5 and macOS 13.4 betas as well.
iOS 16.4: New emoji, web push notifications, a new Wallet widget, and the return of the home build upgrade pulled from iOS 16.2.
atvOS 16.4: Companion iOS 16.4, the home structure upgrade is the biggest change.
iPadOS 16.4: Everything new in iOS 16.4 is coming to iPad, too.
macOS 13.3: New emoji, fixes for various iWork suite issues, fixes for virtualization programs, iCloud, Task Manager, and more.
