These were my favorite warm-weather shirts for all-day climbing and hiking. They have just the right amount of stretch so as not to limit my movement when I reach for the next hand on the rock wall, yet they fit snugly to wick away moisture and dry quickly.

Way back when synthetic polyester fleece was introduced in the 1970s, it was a fluffy, high-pile fabric that didn’t quite resemble the carpet-like wool products of the 1990s and beyond. But retro is in, and this full-zip pullover is super comfortable and super warm. Because of their warmth, they’re perfect for lounging around the house, wearing around town, and engaging in low-intensity outdoor activities like camping, rather than taking a high-intensity trail or taking long hiking excursions.

Replace the bandana around your neck with a tube cloth that does not need to be tied. Put it on top of your head. I use one just about everywhere outdoors, from high-altitude mountain climbs to steamy summer hikes. They have an SPF-50 rating to block out the sun’s rays, and you can easily drape them over your head or face for protection from dust.

Layering is the big secret to controlling your body temperature outdoors. That starts with the base layer worn next to the skin, and while it should provide some warmth and comfort, it should be thin so it doesn’t overheat when you’re climbing, hiking, or vigorously running. After all, once you get to the base layer, what else can you remove? Merino 150 is luxuriously soft and does not bunch. Despite being made of merino wool, these boxers are perfectly capable of handling summer temperatures because they’re super thin. There are also long bottoms for $60 ($25 off) if you’re looking for a little extra warmth and three-quarter-length bottoms in women’s sizes for $67 ($29 off).

Give me a headlamp that accepts disposable batteries any day. Rechargeable batteries are great close to home, but in the backcountry when the batteries run out, it’s much easier to pop in some new ones (in this case, three AAA batteries). At 350 lumens on its highest setting (of three brightness levels), it was too bright for me on even the darkest trails and mountains. The product description is wrong – you get 60 hours of runtime on the lowest setting, but this setting is fine for camp errands and grinding inside your tent at night.

Keeping food organized on a camping trip with a lot of people can be a real pain. Once you have enough food for five to 10 people, piling it all in a storage bin just doesn’t work. This collapsible mobile pantry weighs 18 pounds, and the shelves and frame are metal so it won’t collapse under the weight of a full load of groceries.

Big Agnes tent manufacturer makes homes away from home in Colorado with an attention to detail that outperforms the competition. We here at WIRED love ’em for their light weight and thoughtful design features, like easy-to-use guy line buckles and plenty of pockets. The 12-ounce Big House will sleep four campers comfortably and hold their odds and ends in the four interior pockets. With two doors, one won’t climb over the other either.

I rated these highly in our Best Reusable Water Bottles guide because even in a crowded market, Hydro Flasks have the durability of a powder coating. It’s hit multiple climbing gyms, hiking trails, and the floorboards of my cars for years without a scratch or dent. There are larger and smaller sizes on sale as well.

The Wildhorse 8 has replaced them, but the Seven are still some of our favorite trail running shoes, thanks to their lightness, breathability, and excellent traction. They run small, so expect them to go up to about half the size of your regular sneaker.

No, they don’t taste salty. They actually taste very good. It is not enough to drink water during strenuous activity. You need to replace lost electrolytes through sweating in order for your body to function. Place a couple of these dissolvable tablets on your tongue throughout the day to keep yourself recharged. I use it for all my outdoor activities, even in the harsh desert conditions, and it really helps me feel fresh.
