We are so crazy about cars that we sometimes forget that not everyone knows how car insurance works in South Africa. But then we remember that every year, there are new people who get their driver’s licenses, buy their first car, or just generally realize how dangerous it is to be without coverage and try their best to figure out what the deal is with auto insurance.
Since car insurance is not compulsory in South Africa, it is something you will need to explore on your own terms. What we mean is that people aren’t really learning about insurance at a younger age in order to prepare them for something they need to have if they own a car.
Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place. We have a lot of information about how auto insurance works in South Africa. Then we took all that information and whittled it down so that you are presented with a useful guide that you can refer back to at any time.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- Car insurer.
- Auto insurance options available.
- How do you get cover?
Car insurer
it is easy. In South Africa, you will pay a monthly fee (called a premium) for a car insurance policy. This policy provides some financial protection against the costs of an accident involving your vehicle. The costs you would be responsible for out of pocket if you had no car insurance and had an accident.
The amount of financial protection you get depends on the type of insurance you choose to pay for. If you choose to pay a little more for a comprehensive policy, you’ll be covered for a lot of risk. If you choose to buy the cheapest insurance policy, you will be covered for a limited number of things that can go wrong.
Example time:
Let’s say you choose to insure the car only for a third party to own. This will cover damage to other people’s property for which you are responsible after an accident. Simply put, if you have a little bumpaccino with the car in front of you, we’ll be there for you and pay for the damage to the other person.
But we will not pay to repair your car because you did not choose this type of coverage.
Auto insurance options available
This brings us neatly to the different types of car insurance available. There are generally three standard types of car insurance in South Africa. But because we at King Price like to do things a little differently, you’ll find we’ve added another level of coverage for you to choose from, aaaa and our comprehensive option is the actual best policy in the country.
Yeah, we know it’s not cool to show off… but we’re super proud of it, and you’ll see why now.
King’s car insurance options:
- Comprehensive car insurance. Our policy is ideal for cars that are being financed, new cars that have a high value and are expensive to repair or replace. (Which is pretty much most cars in South Africa.) It covers damage to your car (and “flaws” you cause to other people’s cars or property), theft, and theft.
- Theft and write-off. Oh man, we’re quietly obsessed with this 1. It’s totally different. Basically, you can choose to just get a cover against theft and write off by choosing our theft and write off cover. If you didn’t know, a car is written off when it is too badly damaged to be repaired at a reasonable cost.
- Third party, fire and theft. A classic policy that proves time and time again that some coverage is better than no coverage. If you get this policy, you will be protected against loss or damage to your vehicle due to fire, theft, seizure of your own vehicle, as well as damage you cause to other people’s property in an accident.
- Third party only. Ever wonder what kind of cover you should get for your 16 year old skedonk that you only use for short trips now and then? this. This is the policy for those cars. It is the cheapest and really covers you from the disastrous financial situation of being involved in an accident with another car, where you are liable for all damages.
